Mark Ruffalo Endorses Kat Abughazaleh in IL-9 House Race

Hollywood star Mark Ruffalo has entered the Democratic primary in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District, endorsing Kat Abughazaleh in a message posted through her campaign social medias. In the clip, Ruffalo urges voters to back Abughazaleh and frames the race around outside political influence, particularly AIPAC’s role in Democratic primaries. The endorsement comes as the March 17 primary approaches and was shared through the campaign’s official social media and YouTube accounts.

That matters less because celebrity endorsements suddenly move huge blocs of voters in Evanston and more because they help shape the narrative of a race. Ruffalo has become one of the more recognizable progressive public figures in national politics, and his backing gives Abughazaleh another burst of earned media at a moment when late attention can still matter. In a crowded Democratic primary, that kind of reinforcement can boost name recognition, strengthen positive associations, and further tie her campaign to the national progressive lane.

Abughazaleh entered the race as a social-media-native progressive candidate with a national following, initially launching against longtime Rep. Jan Schakowsky before the contest became far more crowded after Schakowsky stepped aside. The field now includes figures such as the mayor of Evanston Daniel Biss and State Sen. Laura Fine, who herself has drawn attention for support from pro-Israel political networks. Earlier reporting cast Abughazaleh as a high-visibility outsider candidate with strong online fundraising and a message built around generational change, aggressive anti-Trump politics, and frustration with passive Democratic leadership.

As many within the progressive movement have argued, there is a real need for consolidation behind a single left-leaning candidate to avoid splitting the vote. As of now, however, it does not appear that Bushra Amiwala or Mike Simmons will leave the race before Election Day. Ruffalo’s endorsement, then, serves as more than a celebrity nod. It is an attempt to validate Abughazaleh’s argument that IL-9 is part of a broader fight over what kind of Democrat should represent a safe blue seat in the Trump era. Whether that translates into votes on March 17 is difficult to measure in advance, but the political message behind it is clear.
